John was born in 1796.  John's father was Thomas Herron and his mother was Agnes Johnson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, Hugh, William, Samuel, Richard, Elizabeth, Jane and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the ten children. He had two half-sisters named Margaret and Mary.  He died at the age of 87 in 1883.
