Howard was born in 1849.  Howard's father was James Douglas Herron and his mother was Rebecca Young.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Herron and Agnes Johnson. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named James, William, Jennet, Nancy, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Mary, Margaret, Jeannette and Eliza.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 31 on July 2nd, 1880.
